Why Go There? What to Expect from the Scuba Show

You’ve heard the old saying, “birds of a feather flock together,” right? I’m not sure how to correctly describe a gathering of scuba divers — a school? A herd? A pack? For the purposes of this article, we’ll call them a show of scuba divers. As in, the Scuba Show. Why?  Well, the word “show” fits in this instance, because at the Scuba Show there is a lot to see. It includes every scuba divery-thing you can imagine — and some you haven’t even imagined […]

Very Special Days for Divers are NOW HERE!

Christmas. New Year’s Day. My birthday. My mother’s birthday. July 4th. Opening day of baseball season. The World Series. The Super Bowl. Starting way back when I was a kid I note the passage of time with these “special” days. In my adult years I still do the same with these days, and I have added a few more. The first days every month when bills are due. Various anniversaries.  I also note the first reported sighting of a California gray whale off the coast […]

The Spirit of a Dive Show

Along with California Diving News, we publish Dive Training magazine and the diving industry’s trade journal. So as a working member of the scuba industry, I have attended many dive shows. Heck, I was at the Long Beach show way back in its early days on the Queen Mary. Yet, until we took over Scuba Show I never fully understood them. After we purchased the Scuba Show from Kim and Dale Sheckler, and coming into our third year running it I’ve developed a profound appreciation […]

For a lot of divers, spring is the time when gear that hasn’t been used in a while gets hauled out of storage, and upcoming dives get planned. It’s easy to think that nothing happened to your gear while it sat […]

Looking Back, Moving Ahead

Ask anyone who’s been diving for decades and you’ll undoubtedly hear a common chorus —  diving has changed a lot. Clearly, our sport has become safer. We have much greater access to dive sites all over the world as well as here in California. We enjoy the option of live-aboard diving and visiting faraway resorts at destinations around the globe. Our equipment is lighter, more comfortable, more durable, and far more efficient.  In diving’s early days our sport was about as male-dominated as the starting […]

SCUBA Show 2010 Breaks Records

In its 23 year history, the SCUBA Show has never seen as much exhibit space and attendance then at the 2010 show held May 15-16 at the Long Beach Convention Center. Over the course of the weekend, a record 11,216 attendees enjoyed the largest consumer dive expo in America. 324 exhibit spaces filled the convention center, the most ever. Perhaps the most significant observation by the exhibitors and show attendees as well as the show management was the energy level in the exhibit hall. “Underwater […]

Seasoft Flashlight Pocket

As a diver, I hate when my gear is dangling in the current. Not only can it be unsafe, it doesn’t make for a good picture either. I also hate having a ton of stuff strapped around my wrists. My camera is practically unavoidable, but my dive light can be quite annoying. Well, thank goodness, that the people at Seasoft have come up with a great solution, the Seasoft Flashlight Pocket. I have always had trouble locating my gear when I’m underwater. I think I […]
