Drug Smugglers Wreck on Santa Rosa Island

A team of federal agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security arrested four Mexican citizens and seized over a ton of marijuana after sighting vessel wreckage strung along a beach on Santa Rosa Island A U.S. Navy helicopter reported sighting a Mexican panga of a type typically used for smuggling narcotics and aliens in the Southern California region about 46 miles west of Pt. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Wins Award

Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums, has selected Cabrillo Marine Aquarium as a recipient of the “Connecting to Collections Bookshelf Award.” Anne-Imelda Radice, Director of IMLS, announced that 33 institutions with living collections were selected after participating in a competitive application process. REEF Announces 2009 Volunteer of the Year

REEF (Reef Environmental Education Association) has announced its 2009 Volunteer of the Year recipient, David Jennings of Olympia, WA.  David has been a member of REEF since 2006, conducted over 154 surveys in California and Washington, and is a member of the Pacific Advanced Assessment Team. He has surveyed the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary with the REEF team the past two years. AB 634 Passes Assembly; Artificial Reefs Closer to Reality in California

The California State Assembly has approved the passage of AB 634, helping to lay the groundwork for artificial reefing on the state’s coastline. The bill passed without a single negative vote, announced California Ships to Reefs, sponsor of the bill. It is now in the State Senate, where it will be assigned to a committee for hearing. The SCUBA Show, America’s Largest Consumer Dive Expo, will take place May 15-16 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California. Support DFG Wardens with Stamp

The 2010 California DFG Warden Stamp can now be purchased for $5 at DFG regional and license offices, or by mailing in an order form. All proceeds will be deposited into a special account and used to provide important tools for California’s 385 DFG wardens, including communications and surveillance devices, protective equipment, training, and the K-9 program. Volunteer Docents Needed for Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

Applications are now being accepted for volunteer spring docents at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Volunteers will be trained as docents providing school children with information about the ocean and conducting related activities on Cabrillo Beach and adjacent grass areas. Qualifications include a desire to learn about marine animals and the ocean environment and an interest in children.
