There’s More to Diving Than Diving

Several weeks ago I was honored to serve as the Master Of Ceremonies for the San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition (SDUFEX), a two-evening event in which the audience feasted their eyes and ears on a number of short films created by underwater videographers from all over the world. Produced by a hard-working committee of SDUFEX volunteers, and held in a beautiful state-of-the-art 500 plus seat theater at Qualcomm, this year’s show was the 16th annual. As has always been the case, there was a buzz […]

Why Go There? What to Expect from the Scuba Show

You’ve heard the old saying, “birds of a feather flock together,” right? I’m not sure how to correctly describe a gathering of scuba divers — a school? A herd? A pack? For the purposes of this article, we’ll call them a show of scuba divers. As in, the Scuba Show. Why?  Well, the word “show” fits in this instance, because at the Scuba Show there is a lot to see. It includes every scuba divery-thing you can imagine — and some you haven’t even imagined […]

The Difference is Diving

Over the years I have attended hundreds of trade and consumer shows. I know because I have a collection of show credentials “badges” in my basement, hanging from lanyards. I’m not nostalgic and have never taken time to go through them, but the badges represent different industries, and different parts of a business life that at some point might be fun to recall.  Along with California Diving News, we publish Dive Training magazine and the diving industry’s trade journal, so as a working member of […]

Own Unique California Underwater Art

This year’s Scuba Show featured a lot of artistic talent from our attendees who helped assemble the collaborative painting featured on this month’s cover. The underwater California reef scene was divided into 414 small square chips that guest artists reproduced onto larger tile “canvases.” They used paint, glitter, crayons, pastels and pencil. The completed tiles were placed together with stunning results — a magazine cover image and an original work of art that is now available to the highest bidder, to benefit a nonprofit. Proceeds […]

Very Special Days for Divers are NOW HERE!

Christmas. New Year’s Day. My birthday. My mother’s birthday. July 4th. Opening day of baseball season. The World Series. The Super Bowl. Starting way back when I was a kid I note the passage of time with these “special” days. In my adult years I still do the same with these days, and I have added a few more. The first days every month when bills are due. Various anniversaries.  I also note the first reported sighting of a California gray whale off the coast […]

The Spirit of a Dive Show

Along with California Diving News, we publish Dive Training magazine and the diving industry’s trade journal. So as a working member of the scuba industry, I have attended many dive shows. Heck, I was at the Long Beach show way back in its early days on the Queen Mary. Yet, until we took over Scuba Show I never fully understood them. After we purchased the Scuba Show from Kim and Dale Sheckler, and coming into our third year running it I’ve developed a profound appreciation […]

Getting Certified Is Just The Beginning

Recently, along with thousands of other certified scuba divers and people who are curious about our sport, I attended SCUBA Show 2013 in Long Beach, California. My role was to help represent California Diving News in our booth and give a seminar about diving with big animals. In addition, on Saturday evening I had the privilege and honor of presenting the well-deserved 2013 California Scuba Service award to Dr. Sam Miller III, a longtime contributor to our community in so many ways. While those activities […]
