L.A. County Advanced Diver Program — begins July 9

Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation has announced dates for the 2011 Advanced Diver Program (ADP). Beginning July 9, local divers can take part in this wholly unique diving program that is designed specifically with California divers in mind. Did you know… Sea Star & Abalone Shells

It is illegal in California to take sea stars (starfish) off nearshore rocks if they are between the mean high tide line and 1,000 feet seaward of the mean low tide line? Outside of this zone you may take 35 sea stars and you’ll need a valid fishing license. Dr. Bill Bushing to receive the California Scuba Service Award

The California Scuba Service award was created in 1989 and is awarded annually by Saint Brendan Corp., home of California Diving News and the SCUBA Show, to recognize those that have made long-term positive contributions to the California sport diving community. Poacher Busted Three Times in Three Weeks

A San Francisco man was recently caught poaching abalone during the closed season for the third time in three weeks. The last arrest came on February 19, 2011, when game wardens from the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) arrested Qiong Wang, 31, for felony conspiracy and take of abalone for commercial purposes, among other charges. Research Volunteers Needed at Aquarium

Applications are now being accepted for grunion research volunteers at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (CMA). Participants will join CMA as scientific assistants for handling grunion, setting up field equipment, monitoring procedures, and laboratory techniques in the Grunion Research Program. Volunteers must be able to handle heavy equipment, get wet in the ocean for shallow wading, and be willing to work nights, possibly as late as 1 a.m.  Those under 18 must have permission from a parent or guardian to participate.
