Catalina Island’s 36th Annual Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup – 2/25

Catalina Conservation Divers is hosting Catalina Island’s 36th Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup. One of the largest annual dive events in Southern California, the cleanup takes place Saturday, February 25, 2017.

This event is the only time diving is permitted in the Harbor.

Southern California divers have made the Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup one of the premier social events of the year. Divers retrieve trash and lost items from Avalon Harbor, and revel in the warm friendly atmosphere of Catalina Island.

Last year, approximately 343 participants recovered 4,980 pounds of trash. Proceeds from the event benefit USC’s Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber and Wrigley Institute Scientific Diving Program. Last year the event raised over $20,000 to support the efforts of the chamber, which operates 24/7 to aid injured divers.

The event is open to certified divers and non-divers alike, and many volunteer positions are available for those who wish to help. Dive locations will include Casino Landing, Step Beach, Green Pier and Lovers Cove.

Registration and check-in runs from 7-9:00 am, with a mandatory diver orientation meeting at 9:00 am. Divers are allowed in the water between 9:30 – 11:00 am. Door prize drawings start at 1:00 pm, with prizes awarded from Wrigley Stage from 1-3:00 pm.

Early-bird registration costs $45 for certified divers and $30 for non-divers, through January 3, 2017, after which date the registration fee increases to $55. Certified divers must present a c-card in order to participate.
